Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy helps to restore and maintain pain free body function, mobility and well being. Our therapists are experts in the structure of the body and how it needs to move effectively and pain free. We work with you to help manage pain and restore function so you can get back to doing the things you enjoy.

What to expect

Our friendly team of therapists will offer you:

Headaches

Headaches are one of the most common conditions that is presented within our clinic. This means all of our therapists have experience with this issue and can plan a treatment to approach your presenting symptoms.

There are many types of headaches we can experience. Some you may recognise:

An initial consult with our physiotherapist can help to identify the cause of your headaches, treat the relevant muscle and joint dysfunctions in the neck, and address contributing lifestyle factors, such as posture, stress and ergonomics. We can provide education, advice, at home strategies and follow up appointments to alleviate the effects that headaches have in your everyday life.

Vestibular (Vertigo)

Vertigo, or BPPV, is a specific type of dizziness involving disturbances of the vestibular system which can be improved by physiotherapy. Often symptoms can include a ‘room spinning dizziness’ and is aggravated by change of head positions. Vetsibular physiotherapy can include performing specific maneuvers to assist with octoconia (crystal) movement of the inner ear. Providing exercises to rehabilitate the vestibular system is beneficial to reduce the likelihood of reoccurance.

Hydrotherapy

At Taigum Physio our therapists are trained in Aquatic Physiotherapy. Under the supervision of our qualified therapists, hydrotherapy involves individual or class based sessions. These classes consist of specifically designed exercises, along with water appropriate equipment, to improve your presenting concerns.

Before beginning your hydrotherapy journey with us, you must first have an initial consultation with one of our physiotherapists in the clinic to ensure this therapeutic pathway is right for you!

We offer hydrotherapy at the “Emily Seebohm Aquatic Centre”. Located 523 Telegraph Road, Fitzgibbon, 4018.

The pool is heated, allowing us to offer hydro all year around. The warmth of the water assists with buoyancy and reduces stress on the body, facilitating relaxation of the muscles. The resistance of the water can be used to improve strength in the muscles and developing coordinated muscle activation.

Once you feel comfortable, the physiotherapists can present you with an individualised hydrotherapy program to complete independently at your own convenience.

Benefits of Hydrotherapy:

Dry Needling

Dry needling is an intervention which can be included in combination with other techniques to further promote tissue recovery and minimise pain. This technique required an additional qualification through a postgraduate course. Some of our physiotherapists are equipped with the skills necessary to include this as a part of the physiotherapy session.

Dry needling is different to acupuncture. Whilst there are similarities, dry needling focuses on inserting small needles into specific muscles to ascertain a local tissue change. This is specifically designed to assist in pain relief, reducing inflammation and relaxing muscle spasm to improve the healing response.

Strength & Conditioning

Strength and conditioning training involves using a variety of exercise variation to help improve strength, speed, power endurance, stability, agility and performance. The exercises are designed to be tailored towards improving in the specific areas you require. This eliminates any unnecessary training, making programs both highly effective and time efficient.

Through resistance, agility, propioception and cardiovascular endurance training our Strength and Conditioning Programs aim to:

Taking a strength and conditioning therapeutic approach means that your performance goals are more in focus. Whether it’s improving your general health and well-being, returning to sport from injury, or aiming to take your performance to the next level, our team of coaches can help you.

Zach is our dual qualified practitioner, that has participated in external training under strength and conditioning workshops and would love to assist with your performance goals.

Balance Classes - Falls Prevention

DID YOU KNOW?

Falls are the leading case of injury related hospital admissions in people over the age of 65!
And, most falls that occur at home are preventable!

As we age, many changes occur in our body which can slow us down. Our balance, strength and reaction speed decrease, increasing the risk of having a fall. Following injury due to falls, our ability to recover quickly is impacted by the weakening that occurs in bones when aging.

This is why Taigum Physiotherapy hosts balance and strength classes. Our classes aim to improve these factors through fun, group exercises that challenge various body systems, so you can gain confidence to complete everyday tasks or outings.

Physiotherapists alter exercises to ensure that you are completing exercises to your level, and advancing you when necessary. This ensures an individualised program and safe environment.

An initial consult with the physio will include specific assessments to set benchmarks of your current balance, strength and speed abilities. This can be compared to later to see your improvement!

Massage Therapy

Remedial Massage

Remedial Massage targets impaired muscles and tendons which are tight and knotted. The massage can be performed with deep pressure or lighter pressure, and aims to stimulate blood circulation to the tight muscles as well as improve muscle tone and joint mobility. Stretching may also be performed to keep the muscles from tightening. Remedial massage therapy aims to find any predisposing causes to the muscle imbalance and addresses these factors.

Vicki (left) and Jess (right) are our two qualified Remedial Massage Therapists. They are all registered with Australian massage associations and participate in continuing education programs annually to ensure they’re skills are to the latest knowledge and evidence so they can be applied to your treatments.

Deep Tissue

Deep Tissue Massage is a firm-pressure massage focussing on the deeper layers of muscles. This type of massage can be uncomfortable but beneficial in loosening muscles and improving circulation. Muscle knots, or trigger points are addressed with deep tissue massage. It can be used with sports injuries or chronic pain.

Pregnancy Massage

Massage during pregnancy can be performed usually after the first trimester (after the first 12 weeks of pregnancy). Pregnancy massage is useful for lower back and pelvic pain, as well as leg swelling and cramps. Regular massage throughout the pregnancy is also known to shorten labour duration, and aid in returning to optimal fitness after birth of the baby.

Lymphatic Drainage

This is a gentle, relaxing massage that targets the lymphatic system, which helps with improving immune function and detoxification. This type of massage is recommended for people with swelling in the arms and legs, low immunity and the physically inactive

Sports Massage

This is a type of vigorous massage to improve endurance and performance and minimise injury in any person who exercises, whether in the amateur or professional athlete. Sports massage can be performed pre-event, during the event, or post-event. It often energises the athlete as well as improve blood circulation and lymph flow.

Cupping

Cupping is an alternative type of therapy that is sometimes utilised within our massage treatments. It involves specially designed cups that suction the skin and underlying muscles to promote blood flow, simulate deep tissue techniques, assist with pain and relieve tension. Cupping has been known to leave visible marking post treatment. Results may vary with individuals, but this is something to be mindful of when requesting. Not all of our massage therapists are qualified with performing cupping therapy, so make sure to mention it upon booking.
