“Get Your Happy Back” – Spinal Health Week 2015!

This year the National Spinal Health week runs from May 25th – May 31st with the theme Get Your Happy Back! Everyday more and more Australians experience back pain, from everyday niggles and strains to debilitating back pain that limits their ability to work and engage properly in a healthy lifestyle. Back pain is also a leading cause of lost productivity in the work place and forced early retirement.

The main cause of everyday back pain is poor posture. Lower back pain is a growing problem in Australia and ranks second in the world according to the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) latest Global Burden of Disease study. There are several effects poor posture can have:

Hawaiian Day

Wednesday the 29th of April was deemed “Hawaiian Day” at Taigum Physiotherapy & Massage Clinic.

It was a great day with fun had by all. The patients, staff, and even our team mascot Bone’s (the skeleton) participated in the day’s festivities. The clinic was filled with beach towels, Hawaiian Lei’s, Hawaiian punch, pineapple, pizza and more!!!

Thank-you to all involved and to everyone who joined in with the Hawaiian Day spirit.

Introducing Jamie Usher, the newest member to our team. Jamie graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Physiotherapy from University of Queensland in 2014. Jamie brings a fresh enthusiastic approach, utilising the very latest evidence based techniques to ensure her patients a rapid return to pain free function.

Jamie has a special interest in women’s health conditions. She has  also made a big splash to our clinic in running our hydrotherapy program. Come in and say hello to Jamie!

A New Year, A New You

The New Year is now well and truly upon us. According to an American study, weight loss has once again topped the list of resolutions for this year, with staying fit and healthy slotting into 5th position. Gyms are currently getting their biggest influx of new members with people looking to lose those pesky last few kilos, keep their beach body in shape or finally complete that race they’ve been meaning to do. Whatever your goal, it’s a great idea to check in with a physiotherapist to see whether your exercise program is appropriate to your current fitness level.

Shoulder PressUnfortunately, with society’s trend towards desk based jobs and the resultant shift towards a sedentary lifestyle, those crucial few steps towards a healthier you can come with a few speed bumps. The human body is incredibly malleable, changing to become better at whatever we train it to do. So all those hours spent hunched over a desk makes your body better at one thing, being hunched over a desk! So when you ramp up your activity level from sedentary to fitness freak you can run the risk of sustaining any number of overuse injuries. These injuries are easily preventable by starting your road to recovery with an appropriate and gradual exercise program.

Physiotherapists are movement experts and are well trained in assessing a wide range of muscle, joint, nerve and ligament problems. Too often we see clients who have gone straight from their sedentary desk jobs into a high intensity boot camp, crossfit or 12 week challenge only to break down with an injury after a few sessions. Commonly our enthusiasm makes us ignore the early warning signs of a niggle and we push on.  Left ignored, these niggles deteriorate into a more significant injury which takes longer to heal than if it was addressed when it first flared up, causing our new eagerness and exercise program to come to a grinding halt!

Taigum Physio & Massage Clinic Island Getaway

This year for our annual clinic Christmas party, we decided to escape the hustle and bustle of Taigum Square to the picturesque McLaren’s Landing on South Stradbroke Island to let our hair down. Our day began with our faithful leader Rick “The Skip” Walton chauffeuring us by mini-bus down to Southport from where we were whisked away by catamaran to our island getaway. We arrived to our own slice of heaven where we enjoyed good food, good drinks and a hilarious running commentary and karaoke by the friendly resort staff.

Following a delicious tropical BBQ lunch, our younger staff jumped at the opportunity to enjoy a thrilling 15 minute tube ride, whilst our older staff enjoyed the spectacle from the beach. This was followed up with a leisurely game of beach cricket which all of our staff enjoyed. We wrapped up the day with a relaxing cruise back to Southport by boat. We all had a ball of a time, and can’t wait to see what our next clinic Christmas party will entail.

As 2013 comes to a close and the Christmas season is upon us, we wanted to wish all of our patients, a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, and hope you stay safe over the holiday period.
